Integrity of the immune system is fundamental for the maintenance of health

In the past 25 years immunologists have shed light on the multiple mechanisms that are associated with a physiological immune response,  have partially clarified how immune system pathology results in disease, and have begun to understand how immune system can be manipulated to avert disease.  Immunology is the study of the immune system, the complex array of physical, cellular and biochemical machinery the human body employs to promote health and protect against disease and infection. The immune system’s primary role is to defend against infectious diseases caused by microbial pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. The immune system plays a much broader role, essentially serving as a comprehensive security force for the body, on constant patrol, utilizing diverse means of enforcement. The immune system regulates the proper function of cells throughout the body, thereby playing the pivotal role in preventing the development of cancer.

  • The immune system is responsible for distinguishing self from non-self, and, as a result, provides the critical obstacle to organ transplantation.
  • Imbalance or malfunction of the immune system is the cause of autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other debilitating conditions such as asthma and allergies.
  • More recent research implicates immune dysfunction as a cause or co-factor in a range of other health problems from Alzheimer’s disease to atherosclerosis and infertility.

Given the vital significance of the immune system in human health and disease, detailed knowledge and understanding of immune functions stands to have a major impact on the future of healthcare. Growing scientific and clinical evidence has shown that detailed assessment of immunological functions can be used to track disease progression and the efficacy of medical interventions for a wide range of the aforementioned conditions.
